Nonequilibrium thermodynamics of accreted neutron-star crust

چکیده
We show that, in order to determine the equation of state inner crust an accreting neutron star, one should minimize not Gibbs free energy, as it is generally assumed literature, but a different thermodynamic potential $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}$, which tends minimum at fixed pressure and chemical potential. Once this specified, can calculate heat-release distribution stellar due nonequilibrium nuclear reactions induced by accretion matter onto neutron-star surface. The results are important for adequate modeling accreted interpretation observations stars low-mass X-ray binaries.

Durability of Neutron Star Crust
How long do neutron star mountains last? The durability of elastically deformed crust is important for neutron star physics including pulsar glitches, emission of gravitational waves from static mountains, and flares from star quakes. The durability is defined by the strength properties of the Yukawa crystals of ions, which make up the crust. In this paper we extend our previous results [Mon. N...
متن کاملShear modulus of neutron star crust
The shear modulus of solid neutron star crust is calculated by the thermodynamic perturbation theory, taking into account ion motion. At a given density, the crust is modelled as a bodycentred cubic Coulomb crystal of fully ionized atomic nuclei of one type with a uniform charge-compensating electron background. Classic and quantum regimes of ion motion are considered. The calculations in the c...
متن کاملBreaking stress of neutron star crust
The breaking stress (the maximum of the stress–strain curve) of neutron star crust is important for neutron star physics including pulsar glitches, emission of gravitational waves from static mountains and flares from star quakes. We perform many molecular dynamic simulations of the breaking stress at different coupling parameters (inverse temperatures) and strain rates. We describe our results...
متن کاملMass Measurement of 56Sc Reveals a Small A = 56 Odd-Even Mass Staggering, Implying a Cooler Accreted Neutron Star Crust.
We present the mass excesses of (52-57)Sc, obtained from recent time-of-flight nuclear mass measurements at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The masses of 56Sc and 57Sc were determined for the first time with atomic mass excesses of -24.85(59)((-54)(+0)) MeV and -21.0(1.3) MeV, respectively, where the asymmetric uncertainty for 56Sc was included ...
متن کاملCoulomb crystals in neutron star crust
It is well known that neutron star crust in a wide range of mass densities and temperatures is in a crystal state. At a given density, the crystal is made of fully ionized atomic nuclei of a single species immersed in a nearly incompressible (i.e., constant and uniform) charge compensating background of electrons. This model is known as the Coulomb crystal model. In this talk we analyze thermod...
